Colon Resection: Treating the Large Intestine

At Colon & Rectal Surgical Specialists of New York, we provide colon resection surgery as part of our full range of colorectal care. Colon resection surgery involves the removal of tissue within the colon after it has become damaged or diseased. This surgery requires an experienced and highly trained specialist. To learn more about how colon resection surgery performed by the outstanding surgeons at our Long Island practice can benefit you, contact us today.

Conditions Treated with Colon Resection

The intestines are tube-shaped organs that play an important role in digestion. They consist of the large and small intestines. Your colon is part of your large intestine, which is responsible for absorbing water from food you eat and migrating waste from your body. When your colon is not functioning properly, you can experience dehydration and constipation, and develop much more serious symptoms. If your colon is injured by trauma or disease, a colon resection may be necessary. Common conditions that require resection surgery include:

  • Colon cancer
  • Intestinal polyps
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Diverticulitis
  • Benign tumors
  • Large bowel obstruction
  • Inflammatory bowel obstruction

In most cases, colon resection surgery can help patients avoid the need for a colostomy bag in the future.

Laparoscopic surgery and transanal endoscopic microsurgery are sophisticated techniques we use at CRSSNY. Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive method of performing many different surgeries, including colon resection. Transanal endoscopic microsurgery is a variation on laparoscopic procedures, where we will operate through the anus. We are able to remove growths within the rectum without having to make any incisions in the abdominal wall.

The Procedure

Colon and rectal resections are performed in a hospital setting. Our colorectal surgeons access your colon through small incisions using thin, highly precise surgical instruments. Laparoscopic robotic surgery is less invasive than open surgery, and has a shorter recovery time. It also results in less bleeding and pain than traditional surgery. Our surgeons use an  laparascope to see your organs up close during surgery. Once our surgeons have accessed your colon, they will carefully remove the damaged or diseased tissue and reconnect the healthy tissue. Once your colon has been rejoined, your incisions are carefully closed to minimize visible scarring. A typical hospital stay is approximately 3 days.

Contact Us Today

If you are experiencing anal pain or bleeding, contact us today to make an appointment. Meanwhile, we encourage patients to come in for regular screenings so we can detect any colorectal conditions in their earliest stages. We will work with you to determine if you need colon resection surgery, or if another type of treatment is more appropriate for you
