What to Expect During Your Visit

Questions

Our doctors will learn about your case and ask questions regarding when your symptoms started, how often they occur, the color of bleeding (bright red blood, dark red, or black), how your bowel movements are, and more.

Rectal Exam

We conduct a physical exam of the anus and rectum and check for any abnormalities such as hemorrhoids or fissures. Hemorrhoids can also occur outside of the anus, known as external hemorrhoids.

Endoscopic Exam

In some cases, we use endoscopic procedures to identify the source of the bleeding and examine the rectum and gastrointestinal tract. Exams are performed under anesthesia by our board-certified anesthesiologist to ensure a painless experience.

Don’t Wait
EARLY DETECTION AND DIAGNOSIS IS KEY

Because there are many possible causes of rectal bleeding, it is important to see a colorectal specialist right away. While most cases are minor and can be resolved fairly easily, rectal bleeding can be a sign of something more serious and needs to be checked in all instances. We invite patients throughout Long Island, Garden City, and East Setauket to request a consultation to speak with one of our specialists. You can also call one of our five offices directly.

Expert Hemorrhoid Treatment

A great majority of patients that call our practice complain of hemorrhoidal symptoms. Hemorrhoids can be a symptom of more serious disorders. What Causes Rectal Bleeding?

Anal fissures
Hard stools or constipation
Hemorrhoids
Polyps
Anal cancer
Colon cancer
Inflammatory bowel disease
Ulcerative colitis
Diverticulitis

How Is Rectal Bleeding Treated?

Minor Cases

The majority of anal fissure, hemorrhoid, or constipation cases can be treated with dietary changes that improve bowel patterns. Our doctors may recommend increasing fiber intake, drinking at least 10 glasses of water a day, and using prescribed medication. Hemorrhoids and anal fissures can also be relieved by soaking in a warm bath. If a hemorrhoid is very large and persists despite treatment, we may recommend surgery to remove it from the anus and rectum area.

Serious Cases

If rectal bleeding is caused by colon cancer or other serious diseases such as ulcerative colitis, surgery may be necessary. We use laparoscopic and robotic technology to ensure the highest precision and avoid disturbing surrounding tissue. We may also prescribe chemotherapy or radiation treatment for patients with colon or anal cancer.
